Sally Jo Hand

Sally was born in Houston, Texas and grew up in both Texas and Arizona. She began drawing and painting at a very early age, and entered Arizona State University as a Fine Arts Major in 1968 at age 17, and later completed her BA in Fine Art, with an area of emphasis in watercolor in 1987 at Union College, Lincoln, NE. Sally earned a double major, adding a BA in Theology to her art passion. She went on to focus professionally in theology, and earned a Master’s of Divinity in 1990. Later on, wanting to combine art and psychology with spirituality as a means of enriching people’s lives, she began studying art therapy and completed a MA in Art Therapy from Marylhurst University in Portland OR in 2001. She is a licensed professional counselor (LCPC) and a registered and board certified art therapist (ATR-BC), practicing at The Heart and Hand Center in Bozeman.

Sally began showing her artwork while still a student at Union College, winning first place in the student art show for a watercolor in 1987. She has had one-person shows in Walla Walla, WA, and has had her work shown in numerous shows and galleries in Oregon and Washington.  Taking influence from past masters, like Georgia O’Keefe, Vincent Van Gogh, Aubrey Beardsley, Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, Rembrandt Van Rijn, Michaelangelo, and Andrew Wyeth, Sally has created a body of work that vibrantly plays on the canvas.  She has recently moved from Washington to Bozeman, MT, and has her work on display at the Artists’ Gallery in downtown Bozeman.

The primary mediums that Sally uses in her paintings are watercolor, pastel, acrylic, and oil. If you have any questions regarding her work or technique, please feel free to contact her:
